Temperance,
I've heard countless stories like yours from people who left the charismatic movement. All of them only talk about pride, lies, manipulations inside the groups formed inside it.More

The Fathers of the Church did practice these Charismatic gifts (we just have to read the New Testament and the Didache to see this). But this was necessary for the time they were in (persecution etc.) and the initial confirmatory stages in the development of doctrine and dogma. In other words, babies in the faith required milk.

Have we developed sufficiently to require solid meat? The Church has indeed, but with all that is happening in the church from the inside, might the Charismatic Renewal be serving a similar purpose now as it once did in the days of our Fathers?

On the other hand, when one replaces beauty and sound doctrine for a repeated emotional rush, one leaves orthodoxy behind and gets rather lost in the storm which is Protestantism. Better to remain on the shores of Orthodoxy than to risk an unguided sail into the aforementioned storm of Protestantism!

Each year, as many as 600,000 U.S. Latinos leave the Catholic Church for other Christian denominations, Espinosa said.
In the most recent numbers -- a 2007 Pew Research Center report -- 43 percent of the 4,600 Hispanics interviewed identified themselves as evangelicals who had converted from Catholicism.

The Hispanics are especially big on this stuff...Many who left the church now attend a Pentecostal one....or coming into the Catholic church they bring this Pentecostal behavior with them...I've known a few of these people and it's really sad.

I used to go to these these healing services when I was younger. I got annoyed by them because the priest kept trying to push me on the floor. People would look at me standing while everyone else was lying down on the floor. I almost got mad at the Holy Ghost for not "slaying" me. I went many, many times hoping that one day the Holy Spirit would touch me. One day I did fall down, but it was just to please the priest and the people there. He kept pushing his hand against me forcefully. I didn't want to fall down, but I did just to make the priest and people feel better. Than I realized it was just for show! After that I stopped going.
