Nuns should wear the habit
Published February 2007
... my opinion remains that all religious sisters and nuns should wear the habit of their respective orders.
No longer should these women, who have given their lives to the service of God and the Church, be dressing like laypeople. It is time to return to the ancient practice of wearing a distinct habit - this is not fulfilled by wearing laypeople's clothing!
The habit inspires women to leave their lives and gives themselves to God. The same is true for men who are inspired by the garments worn by priests and monks.
To enter a religious order, one does not just experience a change of heart and soul, rather, there is also a change in the physical realm.
For example, many religious orders require the women to adopt a new name when they become a nun in addition to wearing the habit. Over the past 30 years, the number of women in Catholic religious orders has decreased by around 50 percent. There remains 85,412 …More

Seeing these pictures remind me of the nuns of long ago here in Hawaii. Seeing these pictures remind me of the nuns of long ago here in Hawaii. The First Nuns to arrive here in Hawaii were of the Picpus Nuns, Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary and of the Perpetual Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament of the Altar. They had a beautiful but very complicated Habit, but wore it because their founders wore it. They continued to wear it till the mid 60's. They had a linen Ruff that was starched card board still around their face and a full white habit with a beautiful hand embroidered emblem of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary encircled by the crown of thorns on their scapular. To wear garments like that meant that there were many hours dedicated to preparing the habits before it could be worn. I believe each chore or step that was needed was done with a prayer. That way, even preparing the garments was a sacrifice and penance being offered up to the Sacred Hearts in reparation of sins. The older nuns felt that any work that was done in the name of the order was being done for God and his kingdom. Only a very few religious orders still do and teach this today in 2012. All consecrated religious orders needs to return to the rule on which they were originally founded. Then and only then will they find vocations and flourish once again. 🤦 😲

Gloriatv should have placed off to the right pictures of Sisters out of their habits so we could all see before and after pics.
However if they placed the pics of Sisters not wearing the habits people would probably 🤮 . Its probably wiser this way so people wont get sick 🧐

Add to that all Priest should wear their Cassock enough of the protestant suits.

👍 @Fidelium - In addition to which, that the Clergy don their Clerical attire! That priests be clad in the sacerdotal Cassock (or 'Soutane') should be de rigurer; rather than skinny jeans, an ear-ring in his ear, and designer T-Shirts; or the other extreme, a dreadful pair of trousers and a shirt with a 'built-in' clerical collar that looks home-made! Then there is the 'clerical suit', with its …More

Then there is the 'clerical suit', with its origins in the Protestant church, e.g. the Church of England.... 🙄 Let the Deacon, Priest and Bishop return to their proper attire, viz. the clerical Cassock (or Soutane) - simple, no Versace or D&G, just simply made by the same Nuns depicted in this article!

Nice piece here...hopefully those clerics that not only post here but all that read this will have an awakening (if not too late) .

All that said, I heard they got rid of their headpieces years ago, and while I understand the practical reasons, it seem sort of sad. What seems sadder still is their mission statement is all about advocacy for political change and social justice, which we all know is progressive speak for socialism.

Bill O'Reilly had a guest nun on his show today, Aug 13. She was so obnoxiously Marxist and arrogant she would never get any more respect out of me than I would give Jane Fonda. In other words, about a -2.
The only thing worse than a lifetime leech is an pushy arrogant representative of the parasite culture.
--------------------------------------------

there is no “holiness” wearing the garments of a 13th century widow...I remind you Mother Elizabeth Seton’s sisters wore the garments of a widow of 1800 when she founded them.

And some orders wore heavy serge or linen to work in places (e.g. nursing) where such habits were absurd.

But Vatican II suggested the nuns wear an identifiable uniform.
Instead, they wear short skirts and polyester suits that make them look like out of date 1970’s frumpy women, and they don’t wear the veil and often don’t even wear a cross....

That is the problem. I mean, when pious Mennonite nurses wear a small cap, and pious Muslim teachers wear a head scarf, there is no reason that nuns can’t similarly wear a modified but modest garment so folks know they are nuns.
-----------------------------

I hope and pray that more orders will again adopt the traditional habit. As for me, it is always inspiring to see a nun out in public because she is out there living her life for Jesus. Having nuns wear habits brings God to others. And those that live today in doubt or fear can be comforted by the sight of a nun, who is prayerfully serving the Lord.
-------------------------------------------

Nuns should wear the habit and wimple, just as priests should wear cassocks. Their lives are dedicated to Our Lord, and doing His work upon the earth.
