Amongst the evocative words of Seán Ó Riada is the word
“athfhás” which speaks of something cut down but also of
a new life and better second life after the great harvest.

Can I recommend a book written by a patristic scholar which
addresses the vexed issue of Holy Communion on the hand.

“Dominus est - It Is the Lord: Reflections of
a Bishop of Central Asia on Holy Communion”

Bishop Schneider encourages Catholics to kneel and receive
Communion on the tongue and celebrates the traditional LM.

It is well to remember that in the early church communion
was received on the palm of the right hand and never in
the palm of the left hand which was used for toiletry.

The laity was never permitted to touch the communion
with their fingers and was only permitted to consume
Holy Communion from the palm of their right hand.

A woman could not receive Holy Communion directly
on the palm of her right hand but had placed on her
hand a cloth, where communion was then placed.

When a woman finishes breast feeding a child, she will
have a cloth at hand to place over the seeping nipple
to prevent milk running down to stain her clothes.

Saint John Chrysostom’s beautiful analogy of a breast
feeding woman parallels the actions of a woman. It
is an intimate moment of nurture & nourishment.

AaronBrennan, the news brief addresses the subject of how
to receive Holy Communion on the tongue. As stated in my
first post on this thread, I have never received communion
on the hand - and have no desire to receive it differently.

My reason for posting the quotation from the golden mouth
of Saint John Chrysostom was for visitors to read some of
the most sublime words ever spoken on Holy Communion.

I could go into far greater depth into the historical nature
and symbolism of those golden words but I will not do so.

Time passes by swiftly for men, now is the time to pray.

“He mingles Himself with each one of the faithful through
the mysteries. He feeds with Himself those whom He has
begotten, and he does not farm them out to another, and
thus he also persuades you again that He has taken your
flesh. Let us not, then, be remiss, since we have been
counted worthy of so much love, of so much honour. Do
you not see the babies, how eagerly they grasp the
breast, how impetuously they fix their lips upon the
nipple? Let us similarly approach this table, and the nipple
of the spiritual cup. Or, rather, with much more eagerness
let us, as infants at the breast, draw out the grace of the
Spirit. Let it be our one sorrow not to partake of this food.
The things offered here are not within man’s power. He who
did these things then, at that Supper, also accomplishes
them now.”

AaronBrennan, the main reason I am interested in the above
quote is that there are over 30 quotations in circulation that
have been misattributed to Blessed Mother Teresa and many
mutations can be found in other European languages. If you
could supply a book / internet reference it would be greatly
appreciated as I have not come across those words before.

I have never received Holy Communion in the hand, and
have no desire to do so. Mother Teresa did acknowledge
that receiving Holy Communion in the hand was permitted,
although Blessed Mother Teresa preferred the Missionaries
of Charity to receive Holy Communion on the tongue. As for
it being a sin to receive communion in the hand; those words
would go against Holy Mother Church, something that would
be unthinkable for someone such as Blessed Mother Teresa.

It's so easy to forget how privileged we are in the west.

Sniffing glue to stave off hunger and loneliness is tragic.

the assistance of Chinese toddler Yueyue after the girl was
knocked down by a van in Foshan city, Guandong province.

Qu Feifei, the mother of the two-year old girl discovers her
daughter has wandered away from her mother's shop into
the road. Mrs Qu comes into view to pick up her daughter.

The critically injured toddler whose Chinese name translates
to “Little Joy” was rushed to hospital where she died 8 days
later of her injuries. May Yueyue know great joy in heaven.
