No statue: Pope Francis has requested that a statue dedicated to him be removed. The statue was erected ten days ago in the gardens of the Cathedral of Buenos Aires. Argentinean newspaper Clarín reports that the minute Francis found out about the statue he telephoned the cathedral in person and demanded it be “removed immediately.” The statue is the work of artist Fernando Pugliese who has created other monuments dedicated to John Paul II and Mother Theresa.

Michael Kessler is a Georgetown University professor who advocates for same-sex marriage and has compared supporters of traditional marriage to racists. He will teach a course this fall called “Law, Ethics, and Politics: The Case of Marriage” according to cardinalnewmansociety.org. Georgetown is ostensibly a Catholic University run by the Jesuits. Kessler is associate director of Georgetown’s Berkley Center for Religion, Peace, and World Affairs and visiting assistant professor of government.

Lies against the Vatican: According to Italian press reports, Massimiliano Marcianò is a close friend of the recently arrested Vatican monsignor Nunzio Scarano who is accused of money laundring. Marcianò gave a statement to the police saying that he was standing one day with Monsignor Scarano on a square vis-à-vis the Vatican when he saw that suitcases full of gold bars were loaded into two delivery-vans. Marcianò asked Scarano for an explanation but did not receive any response. Marciano’s claim is obviously wrong – how could he see what the alleged suitcases contained - but, nevertheless, his lies are widely diffused by the Italian press.

Orthodox bishop drowned: Tuesday, Kiril, a bishop of the Orthodox Church in Bulgaria was found dead on a beach in the Black Sea city of Varna. The bishop was wearing a diving mask and a snorkel and apparently he had drowned. Police said there was no sign of violence. The 59-year-old bishop, known for his opulent lifestyle, temporarily led the Bulgarian Orthodox Church after the death of Patriarch Maxim in November 2012. However, he was replaced by the election of Neofit as the new patriarch in February. Kiril was among 11 Orthodox bishops who were exposed as former agents of the communist-era secret services in Bulgaria. His funeral is scheduled for Thursday.
