This sounds like it is a feast about a building, but it really is about Saint Francis. Because of the remarkable witness that St. Francis has made to the world, a magnificent church was built in his honor. The Cornerstone was laid the day after Saint Francis's canonization in Assisi in 1228. A tribute of the world for one who chose to leave the world behind, a tribute of thousands who loved and revered this simple and holy man for his goodness, his simplicity and his unswerving devotion to God.
In 1253 on the 25th of May Pope Innocent IV solemnly consecrated the Church. Seven years later to the day, the remains of Saint Francis were taken from the chapel of Saint George and placed in the new church. Day after day, the church is filled with pilgrims from all parts of the globe who come to visit Saint Francis. For he still lives, his spirit is here as it is in all of Assisi. His laughter and his singing, his love for the poor, his care for the sick, always his oneness with those who are the little ones.
Such a tribute to a poor, little man who gave up everything and has gained the whole world. On March 25, 1754 Pope Benedict XIV raised the patriarchal basilica to the dignity of a papal chapel.
