Mary Live with Dr. Mark Miravalle: Two Cardinals Defend Mary Co-Redemptrix in Rome
Cardinal Burke and Cardinal Müller offered a historic Marian contribution on October 7-8, 2026, in Rome through their defense of the title Co-redemptrix. What precisely did they say? Join Dr. Mark Miravalle in this week's Mary Live for the answer.

(0:00) Hello and welcome to MaryLive. This is Mark Miravalli. My friends, I do not think it is (0:05) hyperbolic to talk about a historic contribution that happened on October 7th and October 8th, (0:14) 2026, in terms of two prominent cardinals who did a remarkable, I would say inspired defense (0:22) of Our Lady's true role and title as the human immaculate co-redemptrix.
I'm speaking about (0:30) a conference that took place in Rome entitled De Maria Numquam Satis, about Mary never enough, (0:38) the expression of St. Bernard of Clairvaux. This happened at the Augustinianum in Rome, (0:45) again on the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary, October 7th and then October 8th the following (0:51) day. The two cardinals, the first cardinal is Cardinal Leo Burke, who I would say is well known (1:00) for his, in my opinion, heroic defense of the title of Our Lady co-redemptrix, as well as (1:07) Mediatrix of All Grace as an advocate, his encouragement and support for decades regarding (1:14) these truths and even the potential fifth Marian dogma.
So his presentation was extraordinary, (1:22) but expected. What happened the next day, and we're going to go back to his presentation in a (1:27) moment, my goal is to give you a very brief summary of these two historic presentations in Rome. (1:34) The second day was a presentation by Cardinal Gerhardt Mueller, and that was the surprise (1:45) presentation who also gave a phenomenal theological defense of Mary co-redemptrix.
Now let me justify (1:52) you having to listen through a very brief summary of two great theological papers and defenses of (2:00) Mary co-redemptrix. It's because, first of all, this is the mother you love. You want to know the (2:05) truth about her.
You want to be able to articulate it as well, at least on a fundamental basis. Now, (2:11) I don't mean to insult anyone. Some of you can articulate it in my mind far better than many (2:17) a theologian, but it's important that you know it.
Secondly, on many occasions, in many cases, (2:26) your parish priest doesn't know. I make no indictment about that. I'm simply stating the (2:31) fact.
Sometimes seminary study does not include an appropriate treatment of Mariology, even though (2:37) Ken Law and the congregation, now Dicastery for Education, says it should be. Here's the reality. (2:44) Many of your parish priests do not know or feel comfortable explaining the co-redemptrix title, (2:51) let alone permitting its use, especially in light of the November 4th, 2025 Vatican statement, (2:59) Mater Populi Fidelis, which states that, quote, it is always inopportune or inappropriate to use (3:06) the title, with a later clarification by Cardinal Fernandes saying, well, that's not exactly the (3:11) case.
When it's explained properly, you can use it. So there's good reason to, quote, (3:17) suffer through some theology so that you understand how Our Lady is rightly called (3:23) co-redemptrix, why it is a legitimate title for Our Lady, and in some cases, you're perhaps (3:31) imperative to explain it to the people around you and even pastors around you. So let's go through (3:36) these two presentations very briefly.
I'm not going to do justice to them at all. I just want (3:41) you to get the heart of them. So on October 7th, Cardinal Leo Burke gives a presentation.
Here's (3:51) the title, Our Lady of Guadalupe and the Reign of Christ the King, the Mission of Co-Redemptrix (3:58) and of Co-Redeemers. Now, once again, I say this, take away none of the merit or courage in having (4:08) his eminence speak this truth while in Rome. By the way, Cardinal Fernandes from the DDF was invited (4:15) to the event.
He was not able to make it. Several of the other curial cardinals were invited, so it (4:20) was really a positive spirit of, let's explore this with greater detail and in light of what the (4:27) Church, what Scripture, what Tradition, what the Magisterium teaches on these titles. So Cardinal (4:33) Burke began, and I want to read one critical quote from him.
He says right at the beginning, (4:40) quote, The Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, participated in an altogether unique way in the (4:47) mystery of faith, the mystery of the redemptive incarnation, and is rightly called the Co- (4:54) Redemptrix. He will several times in his presentation call Our Lady the Co-Redemptrix and (5:00) also her consequent role as Mediatrix of All Graces. Now, he will quote a dear friend who (5:07) passed a few years ago, Monsignor Arthur Culkins, in explaining this basic distinction, and the (5:14) distinction is between what is called objective redemption and subjective redemption.
Some (5:21) classical theological formulations will use in sensu primo, in the first sense, and in sensu (5:28) secundo, in the second sense. What does all that mean? It means that in the great act of redemption, (5:37) Jesus and Mary will participate in the first act, the objective redemption, meaning to actually (5:46) acquire, to obtain the graces of salvation. This is sometimes called ascending theology of (5:55) redemption.
In other words, this is what they do because the Father willed it. The Son becomes the (6:03) Word made flesh through Mary, and the two of them, the new Adam and the new Eve, accomplish the work (6:12) of redemption in terms of obtaining the graces. That's your keyword, obtaining, acquiring the (6:19) graces.
Only Jesus, obviously, as our divine Redeemer, and Mary, as an immaculate human being, (6:27) have this providential role as willed by the Father. So that's objective redemption, or in (6:34) sensu primo. What is subjective redemption, or in the secondary sense, that is the distribution (6:43) of the graces obtained by Jesus, the new Adam, and Mary, the new Eve, to the human heart.
So, (6:49) of course, we have to receive those graces to be saved. It's not enough that Jesus and Mary, (6:55) the new Adam and new Eve, did their redemptive and co-redemptive suffering. That has to be received (7:01) by the human heart through free will.
That's subjective redemption. That's, again, in the (7:09) secondary sense. Now Cardinal Burke will do a masterful presentation using Our Lady of Guadalupe (7:17) as an example of both objective redemption and subjective redemption.
(7:24) So he will say that in the first words Our Lady gives to Juan Diego, she talks about being the (7:32) Mother of God, the Perpetual Virgin, the Mother of God. And in that sense, because she's Mother (7:39) of God, and it is Jesus who's going to redeem humanity, in that sense, the Guadalupe message (7:47) does refer first to objective redemption, that Mary has this role as Mother of God in giving (7:54) flesh to the Word. And that's why Cardinal Burke's presentation really focuses on the (7:58) redemptive incarnation, meaning that when God becomes man to save humanity, and he does that (8:07) through an essential and intrinsic role of Mary, well then, she already has a unique (8:14) role in the objective redemption, in the acquisition of the graces.
As Mother Teresa (8:20) would say, you know, no Mary, no Jesus. Mary doesn't say, yes, we don't have a redemptive (8:27) incarnation. So Cardinal Burke will argue that in the first message of Guadalupe, (8:33) Our Lady reveals her role in the objective redemption.
And then secondarily, in the ongoing (8:39) messages, she speaks about her role as the Merciful Mothe
r. Is she not there in the fold (8:46) of our arms and in the midst of our needs? And therefore, that's her role as Mediatrix of all (8:52) graces. So he will quote John Paul II, he will quote five paragraphs of the October 25th, (9:01) 1995 Wednesday audience of John Paul II, where he talks about the whole history of co-redemption.
(9:07) It's a beautiful reference. It's just odd that some presently are not acknowledging what is (9:14) papal teaching. John Paul II uses the title seven times.
You've heard this many times if you're a (9:19) frequent member of the program. So Cardinal Burke supports co-redemptrix, Mediatrix of all graces, (9:28) and at the end of his presentation, he quotes Father Jean Gallo. Now Father Jean Gallo (9:34) was a very respected Vatican author, a Belgian from Jesuit, who says, if you can't call Mary (9:41) co-redemptrix, then we no longer are co-redeemers.
But in fact, that's the teaching of Scripture, (9:49) and the Church, Colossians 124. We're called to make up in our body what is lacking in the (9:55) suffering of Christ for the sake of his body, which is the Church. Co-redeemers in Christ, (10:00) John Paul II would say.
So October 7th started this symposium with a great, courageous testimony (10:09) and defense and articulation of why the Church is called Mary the co-redemptrix. And I encourage you (10:15) to read these. These are very readable.
Certainly Cardinal...I mean, in the sense of something (10:24) that's not a theological challenge, Cardinal Burke's presentation is really initially able (10:32) to be read by all. Now Cardinal Mueller takes, I think, a little bit more unpacking, so let's now (10:37) go to Cardinal Mueller's. And again, please bear with me.
There's a couple of theological (10:42) distinctions here, but they're gold. They're so very important for us understanding the Mother (10:47) and understanding our role. So I'm going to go to the key paragraphs of Cardinal Mueller and then (10:57) unpack it as follows.
Again, we'll keep it brief. He says, quote, (11:02) when therefore Mary is called co-redemptrix in Catholic piety and theology, this is neither (11:08) a misleading attribution nor an enthusiastic exaggeration, but a truth objectively contained (11:16) in revelation. So rightfully, headlines all over the world quoted that.
Why is that so important? (11:23) Because here you have Cardinal Mueller, and once again, Cardinal Mueller was the previous prefect (11:31) for the congregation for the doctrine of faith, now called the Dicastery. In other words, (11:35) he previously had the position of Cardinal Fernandes, and he's also the editor of all (11:43) the works of Pope Benedict. He is a world-class theologian, and he's saying it's not something (11:51) subjective.
It's not just pious. It's contained in revelation. That's, quite frankly, the kind (12:00) of language you examine when you're pondering the possibility of a solemn definition.
Is it (12:06) in the source of revelation? Because a dogmatic statement says this is revealed by God. Well, (12:13) at least from a theological perspective. We don't want to do any inflation here, (12:17) but from a theological perspective, when Cardinal Mueller says it's a truth objectively contained (12:24) in revelation, this is a huge foundational statement by a world-class theologian who was (12:33) in charge of the very commission and the very now Dicastery for which Mater Populi Fidelis (12:40) came out.
Now, I've mentioned Mater Populi Fidelis again. Remember, this is the November 4, (12:45) 2025 document that came out under Cardinal Fernandes, which spoke about an, quote, (12:52) inappropriateness or an inopportuneness about using the title of Coridendrix. That's why this (12:57) is so valuable.
Now, and we're going to limit this goldmine of Cardinal Mueller's presentation (13:04) to three or four major points. How does he come to this conclusion that Mary's role as Coridendrix (13:13) is objectively contained in revelation? He does really a masterful presentation of the difference (13:20) between Catholic and Protestant understanding of grace and human cooperation. Simply put, (13:30) the Protestant position holds that due to the sin of Adam and Eve, (13:37) the human person is gravely corrupt.
That is, the human person not only loses grace, (13:45) but loses the very natural image of God. It is also, as Cardinal Mueller points out, (13:53) the position of classic Protestant theology that the human person cannot retain. He can't get it (13:59) back.
This cannot be replaced, that he is in the image of God, which means he can't will the good. (14:07) He can't even follow the natural law. He can't even come to a knowledge of the existence of God (14:13) without grace.
But the grace does not enter and transform the human being (14:20) back to a basic goodness. That's lost. The only thing the person has is grace, an act of faith (14:29) in grace.
Literally, the position says that without grace, every human being is going to hate God. (14:36) The Catholic position is radically different, as Cardinal Mueller points out. He says that, yes, (14:40) we lose the possibility of grace for redemption through the sin of Adam, (14:45) but through the redemption wrought by Jesus and secondarily by Our Lady, by way of participation, (14:55) grace transforms nature, and therefore we are able to positively and meritoriously cooperate (15:04) with God's plan.
Now, we're going to see how all this—that might sound very abstract right now—we're (15:09) going to see how that all will take a critical concretization in the person of Mary. So Mueller (15:17) will say, and I'm going to read the second quote here, he will say, this title, the co-redemptrix (15:25) title, must not be suppressed in silence on account of its rejection by Protestants who, (15:32) on the basis of their doctrine on justification, understand redemption as excluding man's free (15:39) cooperation and thus diminish its scope. Rather, it calls for an explanation within the overall (15:47) context of the divine human work of redemption accomplished by Christ, the Son of God, and Mary.
(15:55) Notice what he says there, my friends. If you have a Protestant understanding of anthropology, (16:02) of the nature of the human person, and of grace, whereby a human can't cooperate fruitfully, well, (16:09) of course they're not going to accept the title of co-redemptrix. They're also not going to accept (16:12) the proper understanding of Colossians 124, that we're called to make up what is lacking (16:17) in the sufferings of Christ.
So Cardinal Mueller quotes St. Thomas Aquinas, again, rather brilliantly, (16:25) as St. Thomas talks about in question one, in part one, question 23, in his response to the (16:32) second objection, saying, you know, God has given a dignitas causality totem, which means (16:44) a dignity of causality to creatures.
Why? Because it's part of beauty, St. Thomas will say, (16:55) and because it rightly allows creatures to participate in this great work of God. (17:05) In other words, the dignitas causality totem means that we have the dignity to be able to cause good (17:15) things, and this is embodied by St. Irenaeus in the second century, and that's why Cardinal Mueller (17:23) says this is in Revelation.
This is an ongoing truth that's biblical, and that continues by the (17:30) with the New Eve, and then it leads up to the middle age concept entitled the (17:37) co-redemptrix. He literally says you can't reject co-redemptrix because you say it's from the Middle (17:42) Ages, because if you understand dogma correctly, it's an ongoing organic development from Scripture (17:48) in the Apostolic Church all the way through. And so that's why he quotes St. Irenaeus in the second (17:55) century, saying Mary is the cause of salvation for herself and the whole human race.
This is (18:04) something that is not properly articulated, unfortunately, in Mater Populi Fidelis, (18:11) and that's, and by the way, Cardinal Mueller will share to a journalist that in former days, (18:20) and this is a paraphrase of the quote, in former days when he was examining the issue for a dogma, (18:25) of Mary's co-redemptrix, he did not fully appreciate elements that he now has come to include in this (18:33) reflection. So very humbly, Cardinal Mueller has said, yeah, he himself has had a change of mind (18:39) and heart regarding the co-redemptrix title, and it's important for safeguarding the fact that (18:46) we are called to cooperate with God's grace, and that it has a meritorious effect. He wants us, (18:54) that's part of the dignity of causality that God has given us.
In fact, Cardinal Mueller will also (19:02) quote St. Thomas Aquinas in the terse part, question 26, article 3, where he says that (19:13) you can use terms that are true about Jesus, but analogously, they're true about us. Let me read (19:20) you the reference. He says, Christological titles are also applied to us by analogy.
Christ is the (19:29) substantial Son of God, but we are also, by the grace of adoption, sons of God. So he will go down (19:35) and say, by the way, what's analogy? Analogy is where two things are essentially similar, (19:41) but they're also essentially different. So for example, Jesus is the divine Redeemer.
He's the (19:46) only divine Redeemer. That's different from any creature. He's the God-man Redeemer.
I think all (19:55) Catholics get this. I'm not sure there's a big confusion about this, and ergo, needing a (20:00) correction. But what's similar? What's similar is that we as human beings can participate (20:07) in the redemptive work.
That's why St. Thomas Aquinas would quote, as many authors today, (20:13) 1 Corinthians 3.9. We're God's co-workers, not equal workers, but we work with God. (20:21) Most of us get this, right? This is kind of 101 Catholic stuff. (20:27) But St. Thomas Aquinas also says you can use the term mediator, which is unique to Jesus, (20:33) he's the one mediator between God and man, to express human, creaturely participation in mediation.
(20:41) What example does he give? Priesthood. He will say, (20:47) they do not, however, exercise the ministry of priests and mediator in a primary and perfect (20:52) manner, that is, ordained human priests, but only in a ministerial and preparatory way. (20:59) And so every baptized person is called and bound to collaborate, Mueller adds, in the spirit of (21:05) so that all men may become sharers in the redemption of Christ.
Anyone familiar with (21:12) the rules of Catholic theology cannot find any reason for scandal in the analogical use of (21:20) Christological or soteriological titles. That is to say, terms that are true of Jesus and terms (21:26) that are true of redemption can be applied to us. Why? Because he's given us this dignity of (21:31) causality.
It's a real causality. It's not lightweight. It's not pro forma.
We can really (21:38) have an impact on saving souls. That's why Catholic evangelization is so important. That's up to us.
(21:44) We're called to respond. But as Cardinal Mueller ends by saying, if Mary is not co-redemptrix, (21:57) then none of us are co-redeemers. And he's quoting, again, Father Jean Gallo, a Vatican (22:03) author with great respectability and credibility.
And that's what we can't lose. So what do we have (22:10) here, my friends? We have two cardinals in Rome defending a classic Catholic title, (22:19) but also a doctrine. That's why I'm so appreciative of both of their treatments, (22:24) because it's saying, this is not just an aside honor to Our Lady.
It's not just another title (22:30) that we kind of like. This is preserving her truth and doctrine, and it's preserving you and (22:35) mine truth and doctrine in terms of our role as co-redeemers in Christ. So this is big stuff, (22:41) I would dare say, and that's why I will end by calling it a historic contribution.
I think (22:47) one that, you know, Vatican authorities will properly have an open heart to, and God willing, (22:54) will take note of the undeniability of what's presented here as authentic Catholic doctrine, (23:02) as Cardinal Mueller says, as something objectively contained in revelation. And that's why we will (23:09) continue to pray for clarification, for a modification, ultimately, as many authors (23:15) throughout the world have said. The best way of clarifying is a dogma, is a solemn definition, (23:23) because certainly there's enough confusion, and this confusion continues.
Now you have, you know, (23:29) an ex, a former prefect of the congregation now di Castro, the doctrine of faith, (23:37) who is saying something in direct contradiction to something from the present prefect, (23:45) di Castro, for the doctrine of faith. That's going to cause confusion, but God willing, (23:52) clarification. Once again, oftentimes, for a definition to happen, you need to have controversy.
(24:01) I wouldn't plan it that way, that's just what history tells us, but we've got the controversy, (24:05) we've got the confusion, let's continue to pray. Let's be encouraged of heart that, for example, (24:13) this remarkable change of position of Cardinal Mueller, which I believe is a result of your (24:18) prayers, of the rosaries, of the prayer of the Lady of All Nations, which is completely approved. (24:23) I believe that had a factor.
That's my own personal belief, you are free to have your own (24:27) judgment on that, but I believe that the prayer is the greatest thing we can do, along with (24:33) spreading the truth that the Virgin Mary, the Immaculate Conception, is also the human (24:40) co-redemptrix and mediatrix of each and every grace of the redemption. And we praise God for (24:46) that design of Our Lady, and done by God the Father, we praise God for Our Lady's response (24:52) to that design, her fiat, by which the world has its Redeemer, and we have the possibility (24:58) of redemption. Thanks for being with us and may her life, God bless you all.

Oktober – also an zwei aufeinanderfolgenden Tagen.
Was bedeutet das?
(9:15) Johannes Paul II. verwendete diesen Titel siebenmal.
(9:59) Miterlöser in Christus, sagte Johannes Paul II.
(15:55) Seht ihr, was dort steht, Freunde?
(16:50) Warum?
(19:34) Was also (19:36) ist Analogie?
(22:09) Was haben wir also hier, Freunde?
