The victims' lawyer talks:
- Lawyer criticizes secrecy: Laura Sgrò, who represents five women accusing former Jesuit Marko Rupnik of abuse, says the Vatican's doctrinal office has ignored her requests for information about the case.
- Victims excluded: She says the alleged victims have not been called to testify, and her request to participate as their legal representative received no response.
- Calls for basic transparency: Sgrò says she is not asking for a public trial, only enough information to protect the victims' rights, including access to witness testimony.
- Judges remain anonymous: The Vatican has confirmed judges were appointed, but their identities are secret. Sgrò argues this prevents scrutiny of possible conflicts of interest and undermines confidence in the process.
Victims ignored: Rupnik’s trial is yet another …

Cardinal Zen: ‘Protection’ of the family a ‘primary mission’ for Church today

Joseph Cardinal Zen has urged Catholics to make protecting the family a “primary mission” in pastoral work, in order to fight back against a society that has lost an understanding of the “meaning of life”. In an essay published today on his blog, Cdl. Zen offered a commentary both on scripture and on the state of the Church in the world today. Such is his regular style, linking the sacred texts to a specific message, and this latest was no exception as he dwelled on the parable of the pearl of great price.

Timeline: Rupnik case from December 2022 until now

VATICAN CITY (PerMariam) — With the Marko Rupnik case making a return to the headlines this week, after many months of silence – even years – since any substantive update, it is perhaps useful to recall the timeline of the affair. On Monday, Messa in Latino (MiL) wrote that reliable Vatican sources had informed them that Rupnik would soon be acquitted in his trial. This is the trial which apparently began in October 2025, after the Vatican re-opened an investigation into Rupnik in October 2023. Even though coverage of the report was limited enough, the Vatican obviously perceived that this represented too much of a PR threat and thus issued a denial some 48-hours later. “The review of the case is still ongoing, and the panel is examining documentation provided by the dioceses involved, the Jesuits, the parties concerned, and from the press,” the Vatican press office stated. {For full details of said update, see a report by this correspondent} In allegations which became public in late …

Woman gives joint homily with German bishop despite Vatican ban

In an apparent direct violation of the Holy See’s prohibition, a lay-woman gave a joint sermon during Mass in the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising this week. Marking the feast of St. Mary Magdalene on Wednesday, the auxiliary bishop of one of Germany’s most populous and prominent archdioceses delivered a “dialogue sermon” with a woman during the feast-day Mass. Bishop Wolfgang Bischof joined with the head of the Archbishop's Women's Commission, Theresia Reischl, to deliver a joint sermon during the liturgy in St. Michael’s church in Munich.

Mníchovská liturgická kontroverzia obletela celý svet: Mnohé katolícke médiá po celom svete – v angličtine, francúzštine, poľštine, španielčine, taliančine atď. – informujú o najnovšom liturgickom zneužití zo strany arcidiecézy Mníchov a Freising. Prípad sa týka omše na sviatok sv. Márie Magdalény, počas ktorej pomocný biskup Wolfgang Bischof predniesol „dialógovú homíliu“ spolu s laičkou Theresia Reischl, a to napriek tomu, že Svätá stolica nedávno opätovne potvrdila, že homília počas omše je vyhradená pre vysväteného kňaza. Súčasťou slávenia boli aj liturgické tance a balóny, čo ešte viac podnietilo kritiku.

Traditionis Custodes: Five years of unnecessary ‘persecution’ and chaos

Per Mariam: Mater Dolorosa is dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows, the Co-Redemptrix. Per Mariam's writers report on the Catholic Church and the Faith, providing news, analysis, apologetics, doctrine and spirituality. VATICAN CITY (PerMariam) — On this day in 2021, Pope Francis reignited the liturgical wars in the Church by issuing Traditionis Custodes (TC), undoing in one fell swoop what many deemed to be one of the most important elements of his predecessor’s papacy. The motu propriothat easily became a defining point in Francis’ papacy was, like many other controversial texts of his reign, issued on a Marian feast – that of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. It bore the striking and controversial statement that “the liturgical books promulgated by Saint Paul VI and Saint John Paul II, in conformity with the decrees of Vatican Council II, are the unique expression of the lexorandi of the Roman Rite.” Naturally, the more vocal among the team surrounding Pope Francis supported the document through …

Holy See rules SSPX bishops excommunicated, strips faculties for two sacraments

VATICAN CITY (PerMariam) — Following the Society of Saint Pius X’s consecration of four new bishops, the Holy See has declared all six of the Society’s bishops are now excommunicated, and further warned of heavy penalties for the clergy and faithful attached to the Society. Following through with its prior warnings from May 13 and from June 30, the Vatican has now announced that the penalty of latae sententiae excommunication has been incurred by all six SSPX bishops: Alfonso de Galarreta and Bernard Fellay, Pascal Schreiber, Michael Goldade, Michel Poinsinet de Sivry, Marc Hanappier. The first two were consecrator and co-consecrator at the July 1 ceremony, while the other four were those in receipt of the order of bishop. All six SSPX bishops, July 1, 2026 The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith’s Decree cites the reasons as being “episcopal consecration of four presbyters, without a papal mandate and against the will of the Supreme Pontiff,” and then for Bp. Fellay as having …

Leo urges SSPX against consecrations: Praises their love of Tradition and promises 'dialogue' The Pope's letter comes as his first personal appeal to the SSPX, as they prepare to consecrate four bishops on July 1 without having been granted the papal mandate. VATICAN CITY (PerMariam) — Pope Leo XIV has sent a personal appeal to the Society of St. Pius X, urging them to halt the planned July 1 episcopal consecrations as it would be a “sin of extreme gravity.” Just 24-hours before the SSPX plans to consecrate four new bishops, the Pope sent his much awaited final appeal to the Society, seeking to call off the ceremony even at such late notice. It was two weeks ago to the day that Leo commented he intended to make such an appeal, and ever since then Vatican observers have been waiting to see what form it would take. “I pray for you, because to tear the seamless garment of Christ is a sin of extreme gravity,” Leo wrote. He added, notably: The Church recognizes the devotion to liturgical life …

EXCLUSIVE: Cardinal Burke on the Consistory and SSPX consecrations

VATICAN CITY (PerMariam) — Cardinal Raymond Burke has given his assessment of the recent Extraordinary Consistory along with the upcoming episcopal consecrations of the Society of Saint Pius X, noting some remaining concerns about the consistory format, while lamenting the planed consecrations. Speaking with Per Mariam following the recent consistory, Cdl. Burke offered a summary of the event which drew just under 180 cardinals to Rome for the second such meeting of Leo XIV’s pontificate. As many have similarly done, Burke welcomed the return of consistory’s to the Vatican’s regular life, since it offers a chance to “discuss important questions with regard to the Church.” But he also raised his concerns about the small table “synodal” group method which has largely replaced the traditional open discussion. As for synodality itself, on which the cardinals were briefed during Saturday’s meeting, the American prelate said that it “remains unresolved.” “There really needs to be a critical …

Cardinal Muller: Push for lay homilies stems from denial of ‘sacramental priesthood’

VATICAN CITY (PerMariam) — Cardinal Gerhard Müller has added his voice to the Vatican’s in opposing a move by the German bishops to have lay people delivering homilies during Mass. “One cannot arbitrarily divide up priestly powers and outsource them in a functionalist manner,” he warned, “unless one denies the sacramental priesthood altogether in a Protestant manner, subsumes it entirely under the common priesthood of all the faithful, and leaves it merely as a function carried out on behalf of the community.” Cdl. Full testament of Cardinal Ruini: A key aide to Pope John Paul II

VATICAN CITY (PerMariam) — The full testament of Cardinal Camillo Ruini – a key aide of Pope John Paul II – has been published, containing reflections on his long career and the three popes he served under as a prelate. On June 16, Cdl. Ruini died in Rome at the age of 95. Ordained in 1954, he was consecrated bishop in 1983 and made cardinal by John Paul II in 1991. He swiftly became an influential figure for the Polish Pope, serving as secretary general of the Italian Bishops Conference from 1986 - 1991, and then president of that body from 1991 until 2007. He was also vicar general of the Diocese of Rome from 1991 until 2008.
