Jepthe's only daughter greets him at the door of his house with this song. He has vowed a wicked vow that he would kill the first person who came forth from his house on his return from war. Even more wickedly he keeps the vow.

Women of the Basilica.
I went to the Basilica of the National Shrine of The Immaculate Conception here in Washington DC last week to celebrate Mass the TV Mass. Afterward I went to the crypt church and took a series of pictures of the beautiful mosaics of the women of the Scriptures and early Church. Among them are Agatha, Agnes, Anastasia, Anne, Brigid, Catherine, Cecilia, Lucy, Margarita, Perpetua, Felicity, and Susanna.
At the right is a mosaic of St. Cecilia
The Mosaics date to 1927 and were designed and installed by Ravenna Mosaic Co, of St. Louis. They are the backdrops for the 14 side altars that ring the apse and side galleries of the crypt. I could spend hours reading and studying them. Inspiring Latin inscriptions are integral to each mosaic. You can see the rest of the pictures I took here: Women of the Basilica. I recommend you use the slide show option when you get there.

✍️ Fr. Pope thank you for taking time to discuss this. You know both sides and see both sides. As for myself, early on in my conversion I took to the happy, hippy, hand clapping but as I progressed (hopefully) spiritually I came more and more to need a deeper form of expression of my love. Only solemnity and groaning expresses that. It is very human to want to skip over the suffering part and get to the celebration part, but it is only through the Cross do we reach the Resurrection and I do believe a lot of people have gone wrong because they wanted nothing to do with the Cross. Even the Stations of the Cross have either been removed or changed to such an extent that it is impossible to see the Suffering Saviour in them. More and more I appreciate that we are at Calvary when we attend Mass. I find it so disturbing to see people hoppin' and boppin' at Calvary. Such shallow music is like giving a hungry people sweeties instead of meat to strengthen them on the journey. St. Teresa of Avilla …More

Frpope: Very nice Father.......this looks very impressive.....it looks, like it is properly, centered on the Spirit of Our Lord......lets just pray, they can stay, out of the web of contamination....of Our Watered down, moderate section of our Church. The reason, this Church is strong, is because of the country they are in.....anything, that is outside, of the United States, or at least the contaminated parts of the Church, within the United States, is such a welcome blessing to us all.......
This would be a Catholic Church I would not be embarrassed, or disgusted, to be part off......but...Father.....there is even a much more powerful, move of the Spirit that is happening.....and that move, will make more sense, in the next 20 years. And thats when the Church, returns, to its TRADITIONAL ROOTS.....AND THE CORRUPT ROOTS, WILL BE DUG OUT OF THE CHURCH, AND BURNED FOREVER.....

Salvete Flores Martyrum - THe Hymn for the Feast of the Holy Innocents.
I put the following video together to honor these young martyrs. The musical setting is by Michael Haydn of the hymn for the Feast of the Holy Innocents: Salvete Flores Martyrum – It is from his Vesperae In F for Equal Voices, Soli and Orchestra. The singers are the The Group singing is Collegium Instrumentale Brugense. This music is available at iTunes. The Latin text of this ancient hymn is quite beautiful. I produce here the Latin text followed by a fairly literal translation. I would like to call your attention to the second verse and a very charming detail. That verse described these young, two year old martyrs and holding palm branches (the symbol of martyrdom) but as they hold them they play with them, in the way a young child will often fiddle with palm branches in Church. Beautiful and so very human!

A good name is better than good ointment, and the day of death than the day of birth. It is better to go to the house of mourning than to the house of feasting, for that is the end of every man, and the living should take it to heart. Sorrow is better than laughter, because when the face is sad the heart grows wiser. The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning, but the heart of fools is in the house of mirth. It is better to hearken to the wise man's rebuke than to hearken to the song of fools; for as the crackling under a pot, so is the fool's laughter.

Every moment we have on earth is one that we can utilize to continually grow towards eternity with God. Nothing should trouble us more than the question of where we will spend our eternal life.
