Spain hosts World Youth Day 2011
Madrid will be the new host of World Youth Day in 2011, the Pope announced in Sydney.
The city of Santiago of Compostela in Spain previously hosted the World Youth Day in 1989, which was presided over by Pope John Paul II with the participation of half a million young people. After Rome and Buenos Aires, it was the third city to celebrate an event of this nature.
The Archbishop of Santiago of Compostela was then His Excellency Antonio María Rouco, who will host World Youth Day for the second time, now as a cardinal and Archbishop of the Spanish Capital.
In Australia the first reaction was of great joy and emotion.
"Right now I'm shaking, it is a dream come true."
"Well, it is a tremendous joy...we are an important diocese and the Pope rewarded us and did not forget that we are here."
