Sunday Mass Has Resumed in Massacre Cathedral

Sunday Mass has resumed at the Syrian Catholic cathedral in Baghdad amid shattered windows and broken statues and pews. On October 31 a massacre in the cathedral left over 50 worshippers dead. Two Syrian Catholic priests returned from Rome to take the place of the two slain in the attack. 60 Catholics attended Mass on November 7. Archbishop Georges Casmoussa-- himself a kidnapping victim in 2005-- said that the archeparchy’s 75-year-old vicar general has begun to recover. During the attack he was shot in the stomach.

The University Ministry’s Social Justice Program at the University of San Francisco will honor Sister Carol Keehan. Sister Keehan broke with the US-Bishops in order to lend support to health care reform legislation after a pro-life amendment was defeated. Sister Keehan sent a letter sent to the US Congress representing 59,000 Catholic nuns and more than 50 heads of religious congregations and organizations. In the letter she remarks, ‘Health care reform is a faith mandate for life and dignity of all of our people’.

In September the Vatican Library was reopened after three years of restoration. To mark this event, a special exhibit offering a virtual tour of the institution opens today in the Braccio Carlo Magno hall to the left of St. Peter’s Square. The XV century Library allows only accredited scholars and qualified students access to its collection of some 75,000 manuscripts and more than 1.5 million printed books. The institute also possesses some 8,500 incunabula and one of the world’s most important collections of coins and medallions. The exhibit runs through January 31.

Bishop Earl Boyea of Lansing, Michigan will preside at a November 20 funeral Mass for 17 abortion victims whose remains were found in the trash by a pro-life activist. The Mass will take place at the city’s cathedral. The victims’ bodies will be interred in a Catholic cemetery.

Visitor logs just released reveal that Sr. Keehan visited the White House 15 times since the beginning of the present administration.However, on seven occasions, Sr. Keehan met with President Obama himself -- that's a remarkable level of access.
