Miracle of Ocotlan, Mexico: Appearance of Christ Crucified (Our Lord of Mercy) - October 3 On Saturday, October 2, 1847, an earthquake devastated the town of Ocotlan, Tlaxcala, Mexico. The earthquake killed 40 people and left the small town in ruins. Mass was to be held in the cemetery the following day, October 3, presided over the Parochial Vicar, Father Julián Navarro. Just before the start of Mass, two white clouds joined together in the northwest sky, and an image of Christ crucified appeared. More than 2,000 people who had gathered for Mass saw a perfect image of Jesus Christ crucified that appeared in the sky for more than 30 minutes. Those present and in nearby towns were deeply moved, made acts of contrition, and cried out begging, “Lord, have mercy!” This apparition of Christ was called “the Lord of Mercy” and in his honor, in September 1875, a new parish church was blessed, consecrated and dedicated to Him. Humanly speaking, Bishop Schneider doesn't see Leo XIV reversing Francis' course. The celebration of the Pontifical Mass at the end of October in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore - instead of St. Peter’s Basilica - can be described as a “consolation prize,” Bishop Athanasius Schneider told Gloria.tv (video below). It is “sad,” he said, that these Catholics are not allowed to celebrate Mass in St. Peter’s. At the same time, Santa Maria Maggiore is the most important Marian church in Christendom. Both Pius V - who codified the traditional Mass for all time - and Francis - who restricted it - are buried there. Bishop Schneider intends to pray with the faithful for liturgical peace and for the traditional Mass to be celebrated again without restrictions. Bishops’ conferences may pursue “appropriate steps in different contexts” after the 'Amoris Laetitia' meeting. The Vatican today released details of Leo XIV’s meeting with 248 bishops marking ten years of 'Amoris Laetitia' (October 7–14). It will be conducted in a “synodal style.” Participants will work in 16 small groups before discussing their results in plenary. They will use the Synod on Synodality’s “Conversation in the Spirit”: three rounds consisting of sharing personal experience, “resonating” with what others have said, and jointly identifying what has emerged. Fr.
