The Jesuit-led All India Catholic University Federation (AICUF) organized an interfaith observance of Sadbhavana Diwas (“Day of Goodwill”) at St. Xavier’s College in Mapusa, Goa, India, on August 17. The event included readings and reflections from different religious traditions in the presence of students and faculty. St. Xavier’s College is administered by the Archdiocese of Goa, while AICUF is a Jesuit-founded Catholic student movement.

SAINT PETER CLAVER - September 9 Priest (1580-1654) St. Peter Claver was a Spanish Jesuit. In Majorca, the Balearic Islands, he befriended the holy lay-brother Alphonsus Rodriguez. The latter became his spiritual guide and foretold his labors in the Indies. When St. Peter was ordained in New Granada (modern-day Colombia), he signed a final profession document with the words beside his name, "Servant of the Africans forever." He was sent to Cartagena, a slave market on the coast of the Caribbean Sea, and baptized around 300,000 souls. St. Peter learned the dialects of Angola to better preach and serve. The slaves were mistreated to the point of death during the voyage; and St. Peter brought them food and medicine knowing the limits of his human agency. He nursed some slaves back to health when they were on the brink of death. He also advocated so zealously for their human rights that they began receiving better treatment in Colombia.
