"God Has Become Bread" - Leo XIV Reverses Subject and Object “God has become bread” (Dio che si è fatto pane), Leo XIV said on September 5 during an audience with the Perpetual Adorers of the Blessed Sacrament. Taken literally, the words suggest the heresy of impanation: the divine Word united to bread that remains bread, somewhat analogously to the Incarnation. Catholic doctrine is transubstantiation. After consecration, the substance of bread no longer remains. It is not God who becomes bread, but bread that becomes Christ’s Body. The favorable interpretation is that Leo XIV is using devotional or metaphorical language. Benedict XVI used similar language.
